About the course
Governance of Agentic AI: Autonomy, Accountability & Oversight course prepares IEEE CertifAIEd professionals to assess and govern autonomous AI agents. Covers the shift from human-in-the-loop to human-on-the-loop oversight, the new Execution Layer of risk, and the practical controls assessors need for agentic systems.
Course Objective
AI systems are no longer limited to generating content. They are beginning to act. Agentic AI represents a structural shift toward systems that pursue goals autonomously, plan multi-step tasks, use external tools, and execute decisions in live environments. Frameworks built for prompt-response AI do not transfer cleanly. Accountability, Transparency, Privacy, and Algorithmic Bias each have to be reinterpreted for systems that act as surrogates for human decision-making.
This microcredential prepares IEEE CertifAIEd professionals for that reinterpretation. Learners extend the IEEE 11016906 risk taxonomy with a new Execution Layer covering tool use, recursive reasoning, and long-term planning. They examine how the Accountability pillar holds when oversight moves to human-on-the-loop, work through sandboxed execution and kill-switch protocols, and review methods for logging decision paths, chain-of-thought traces, and uncertainty scores. The course closes with the practical task of preparing an IEEE CertifAIEd assessment for an agentic system, including evidence requirements that match the dynamic nature of autonomous decision-making.
IEEE 3119-2025, the IEEE Standard for the Procurement of Artificial Intelligence and Automated Decision Systems, is referenced as a governance anchor for the agentic supply chain.
Target audience
IEEE CertifAIEd AI Ethics Professional certificate holders, including Lead Assessors and Assessors, AI architects, and governance specialists who advise on or assess autonomous AI systems. Particularly relevant for practitioners working with organizations that are deploying multi-agent systems or agentic workflows.
